This is the fix for Macs that boot to a black screen but still have the cursor visible. This issue seems to intermittently occur when a Mac, running Mavericks (10.9), installs a software update that requires a restart. People have mentioned that they've come in to find their Mac like this in the morning after leaving it on overnight, which would make sense as software updates install/reboot automatically.
7 Steps total
Step 1: Power the Mac down
Hold the power button for 10~ seconds until the Mac powers off.
Step 2: Boot to Single User mode
Hold 'command (⌘) + S' while powering on the Mac until you see a black screen with white text, at which point you can release the keys.
Wait for the command prompt ( :/ root# ) before moving to the next step.
Step 3: Run a disk check
Paying attention to spaces, type:
/sbin/fsck -fy
Step 4: Mount the file system as writeable
Scream (computer_fox) Mac Os Catalina
Paying attention to spaces, type:
/sbin/mount -uw /
Step 5: Remove three files
Type these three commands, paying close attention to spacing, and hit return after each line:
rm /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist
rm /Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist
rm /private/var/db/.AppleUpgrade
The second one might return an error, it's ok if it doesn't find that file. Only a couple of the Macs I've encountered have required this to be removed as well.
Step 6: Reboot
Scream (computer_fox) Mac Os 11
Type this and hit return:
reboot
Step 7: Re-configure the login window
Scream (computer_fox) Mac Os X
While this process DOES fix the issue at hand it also reverts the login window back to it's default state. Login as an admin, navigate to System Preference > Users & Groups > Login options and set the options to look like the attached image. Restart the Mac once you're finished.

I've had the symptoms a few times, and in every case a reboot (or two in a few instances) let me in. I've seen a couple other howto's posted on this with different fixes too, with varying results, so next time I'll have to try this one out as well. Great commentary ('paying attention to spaces') and I like the closing explanation of what the whole process does.

Is this a permanent fix? If so then this will be printed and stuck in my folder!

Scott, it seems to be though no guarantees. I haven't seen this issue pop up twice on the same Mac yet. The problem seems to be with the way updates are performed in 10.9, where they install partially before rebooting, then boot, proceed past the login screen and complete the install. Somewhere in the second or third step things seem to go wonky.

I also joined just to say thanks a million. I've been having this issue ever since I swapped my main drive for something much bigger and reinstalled from TIME MACHINE. A little research indicates that I should have not had my second screen plugged in to one of the thunderbolt ports until after the re-install. This fix worked SO well that I no longer have to unplug the thunderbolt screen before a reboot. Working just how you expect a Mac to work. Simple and brilliant. Merci bien

I am not a tech geek, and it is the first time i take chances and type commands in the black page with white letters (i don't even know what it is called). I have tried everything for the last two days, up to the extent that i replaced the ram battery of the mac mini! which is also my first time to use a screw driver in a computer. I have never even replaced a ram in my life!
So this was really my last chance.
I dont know how to thank you!!
It really worked and saved my computer and saved my media from being shared with the repairs' shop...and more...
Thanks a million - Pimientojohnwolfe5 Dec 21, 2016 at 05:31pm
I had this symptom this morning. I'm running an Apple MacBook Pro mid 2010 with OS 10.12.2. After rebooting many times, reinstalling Sierra, running disk utility, all without success, I finally got my desktop back bu typing my password on the black screen and hitting enter. Really? I wonder how long this will continue.

Chris, You saved MY Christmas too. Like many here, I joined just to thank you. I woke up to a black screen. Thought I'd have to buy myself a new computer for Christmas. Not on my list, or in my budget. Yikes! Then I thought maybe it was the Universe telling me to get off my computer for Christmas Day at least. Thanks to your fix I have the peace of mind to enjoy Christmas properly. I also have the confidence of knowing I fixed my own computer. Yay! That is a gift that keeps giving. Blessings to you and to the community. I would have been nervous typing in code from two years ago. But since mario, john, and robbie said it worked for them this week, I tried it and it worked for me too. Merry Christmas to All!

I registered just to say thank you!! I tried smc, sleep, pram, and nothing worked but this! I'm working on a mid-2010 machine with sierra and I was afraid that it finally died on me. You're a real life-saver!

Thank you! Thank you! I've been stressing since the moment I saw the screen and trying other sites' suggestions but this is the one that worked. Thank you so much for posting!
